Wrinkles:
From its name "Elastin" provides elasticity for the skin. Elastin a highly elastic protein in connective tissues, allows many tissues in the body to return back to their shape after stretching. If you pinch your skin now, it is this protein that helps the skin return to its original position.
Collagen on the other hand is a glue that holds the body together. Approximately 30% of the body protein is made up of collagen. It gives the body firmness and strength. In other words Collagen provides rigidity.
As we age,we produce less of these proteins, Elastin begins to lose its resilience, collagen begins to degrade, wounds heal more slowly, the skin doesn't snap back as well and wrinkles are formed. Apart from age, there are other factors that can cause wrinkles.
OTHER CAUSES OF WRINKLES
The following can make a 20 year old develop wrinkles faster than a 40 year old.
Smoking: Have you ever noticed that most heavy smokers have wrinkles around their mouths.
The smoke damages the elastin and collagen fibers. Nicotine from the cigarette narrows the blood vessels. This results to the formation of wrinkles.
Alcohol: An excessive in-take of alcohol dehydrates the skin. Alcohol also destroys Vitamin A which is very vital for the production of collagen. Excessive in-take of alcohol over a long period of time enlarges the blood vessels of the face which will eventually cause the skin to lose its tone bringing about permanent redness of the skin.
Facial Expressions:
Repeated activities of the facial muscles causes grooves beneath the skin. These grooves eventually become wrinkles. Facial expressions like smiling, squinting, frowning can cause lines on the face after a period of time. Some of these lines or wrinkles have specific names; Crow's feet around the eyes are due to smiling, squinting and activity of the eyelid muscles. Worry lines on the forehead are due to contraction of muscles when raising the eye brows. Frown line between the eyebrows are due to contraction of muscles when concentrating or angry.
Genetic Factors: Recent researches have associated the early development of wrinkles to genes. There's a very strong possibility of developing wrinkles when you are young if your parents had wrinkles early.
Ultra violet light: This is one of the major causes of wrinkles. In as much as we get vitamin D from the sun, the ultra violet light from the sun damages the collagen fibers. Sun screen can be effective but extended exposure to the sun can have negative effects on the skin.
High Blood Sugar: Excess sugar in the blood becomes attached to the collagen in the skin. Once attached, the sugar makes the collagen more brittle and it's difficult for the skin to repair itself.
Free Radicals: Free radicals are rogue oxygen molecules that are lacking electrons. Free radicals breakdown collagen when attached to it. They eventually cause wrinkles.
Wrong Sleeping Posture & Poor Sleeping Habit: Nobody can dispute the fact that sleep is good for the body. Researches have confirmed that sleeping with one side of your face and body on the pillow and bed can reduce elasticity and allow lines to form on your skin after a period of time. Early wrinkles have also been associated with not getting enough sleep. Poor sleeping habits can affect the skin negatively.
